City center gets a
park Funding passes

CCNA volunteers were up bright and early the weekend before Memorial Day for the association's tri-annual Clean Sweep Day. The effort is aimed at making the Deco District a better place to work, live and play. More

After two years of planning, the 'pocket park' at Coast and Hurbert is one step closer to reality. On June 15 the Newport City Council approved an additional $100,000 in hard cost construction funding for the park when they adopted the 09/10 city budget. The extra funding was needed when the design and scope of the project expanded beyond the original $25,000 allocated in the 08/09 budget. The new budget begins July 1,2009.
Inpired by the Yaquina Bay Bridge, t
he Art Deco Heritage Park will create a dramatic and memorable landmark to improve the image of Newport and the Oregon Coast to the one million+ visitors who pass by the intersection.
The project is a key part of the revitalization of the district. The unique 30 foot tall art deco style pylon and park will serve as a symbol that the district is emerging from decades of neglect and is now ripe for investment.
A 10x15' terracotta bas-relief mural depicting the history of transportation, bridge and the highway will be a later phase of the project. The mural is to be on the Coast Highway side of the pylon. The park is a partnership of City Center Newport Assn, the City of Newport Parks Dept. and the U.S. Dept of Agriculture's Rural Business Economic Development program.

The City Center Newport Assn. is now registered with the Oregon Cultural Trust as a cultural non profit organization. Among other things, this allows donors to take full advantage of the state's unique cultural tax credit when making donations to CCNA and the Trust.

Also available is a limited edition fine art poster honoring the Yaquina Bay Bridge as an art deco jewel! The heavy weight 18x24" poster is ready to frame and enjoy in your home or office. Created and published by CCNA, the poster features a 1930's vintage photo with added art deco style design. Posters are available from this web site and from select retail and gift shops.
